So Called Dollars

The term “So-called dollars” was the title of work by Richard D. Kenney which first appeared in the Coin Collector’s Journal
in July-August 1953.

The standard reference on the series by this title was written by Harold D. Hibler and Charles V. Kappen (HK), published in 1963.
I see that there is a sanctioned online version of this classic reference:  http://www.so-calleddollars.com/index.html

The first known use of the label is in a Thomas L. Elder  auction catalog, September 27-28, 1912, describing lot 395, the Theodore
Roosevelt medal of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, now known as HK 308.

The term is used to designate medals of near dollar size, at first of a commemorative or exposition nature, with some later issues
of the monetary nature.  Given the amorphous nature of the term, HK have done a remarkable job of classifying these issues and
choosing which pieces to include in their standard reference, which has not been superseded in the 40 years since it’s been published.

I've devoted a separate page to Bryan "dollars", which are included in the HK reference.

Collectors of the series tend to pick and choose which ones of the listed pieces, and nonlisted pieces appeal to us.
I am unaware of any one assembling a "complete" set according to HK.
I’ve collect mostly silver issues of this series,
closer to the dollar size.  I also picture here medals which are not in HK, and perhaps do not belong in HK.

I have indicated with a (**)  pieces that appeal to me that are not in my collection.

CAMEL Cigarettes. This piece  refers to the 1913 advertising campaign by  N.W. Ayers who was paid $250.000 to introduce the Camel  brand on behalf  of R.J. Reynolds. From the style, I suspect a much later origin unrelated to RJR.
