WORLD CROWNS   Afghanistan to Burundi

  Note: This is a private collection, not a commercial site. The pieces listed are not for sale. I am happy to hear from  fellow collectors to share their thoughts. (look for C0NTACT info on my home page.)

   The NCLT invasion?

    This collection started out with circulating (in most cases circulated) dollar size crowns (indicated in bold).
The highlight of the original collection is the 1938 crown that my father brought back from his service in
Australia in World War II  (in the family collection for 60 years).

    In my enthusiasm to expand the number of countries represented, I started accumulating  “noncirculating legal tender”**
pieces, and later fantasy pieces, to the point that no more than  70 of the 400+ pieces represented here could ever have
circulated as money.

       If I had to do it over again, I would draw a line in the sand:
Only acquire pieces that have circulated, i.e. nothing higher than a grade of XF!!

Re: NCLT Issues

See Pitcock, M.: The Coins at the Back of the Book, The Numismatist, 86(8) 1371-75, Aug. 1973
      Discussing "pseudo-coins", "Controversial Recent Issues", "supercrowns"
    distributed by, inter alia, Paramount International &  Italcambio.

Mr. Pitcock cites  list of characteristics of "pseudocoins"
(l) Metallic content of greater value than the denominational face value;
(2) Very low mintage for both the proof and circulation issues, if any;
'(3) Coins only distributed at a price higher than face value,;
(4) Metallic composition unsuitable for circulation use,;
(5) Excessively large face value or physical size to facilitate general use;
(6) Currency units not in general use;
(7) Coins prohibited from or in fact not circulating in the country of issue;
(8) Coins only distributed by a private agency.

  I would add,  not found in circulated condition.
